Mise en scene This is a french term meaning "in the scene or frame". It is essentially everything in a scene apart from camera, editing and sound such as, settings, props, facial expression, makeup,costume,lighting, colour and positioning of character. C o l o u r Denotation- RED Connotes anger, danger, warning and romance. Denotation- BLUE Connotes the sky, ocean, chill and sadness. Denotation- YELLOW Connotes happiness, sunshine and joy. Denotation- GREEN Nature and sick/illness, Jealousy/envy.  Denotation- BLACK Death, mourning, sadness and night time. Denotation- WHITE Calm, neutral, heaven and angels. Connotation and Denotation in scenes

This is an establishing shot. It lets us see the whole location or back round of the scene. It connotes the setting and what we infer from the image. This is a over the shoulder shot. It is a shot of looking over one persons shoulder at another person. It connotes the emotion of the conversation as well as the reaction of the other character, which is in this case, confused and hopeless. This is a high angle shot, it denotes the shot is taken at a high angle and showing some vertical and horizontal information of where he is and what his doing. It connotes inferiority and an establishing shot. It makes us feel powerless, which means the subject must have the power.  This is a canted angle shot. It is turned left or right, so the ship is at an odd angle, as if its leaning to one side. It denotes an abstract vibe and means it could be a fun, tense and exciting scene. Editing Speed of editing In a film each scene may last a matter of seconds, or it could continue for a couple of minutes. The speed of editing will help to determine the mood of what is taking place on the screen. For example an action film would be very fast pace and sped up. If film makers want the audience to feel anxiety and suspense, the editing will be quick- the scenes/shots changing frequently. If a relaxed mood is desired,the scenes lasts longer and changes less frequently. For example in a romantic comedy.  Nevertheless a film need not have any editing. Russian ark was filmed in one take using a steadicam and a digital camera.   This required split-second timing and organisation. Scenes at the beginning of a film- as it begins to tell its story- must be long enough for us to be able to understand where we are and what is going on. Shot Types and angels Shot types Establishing shot An Establishing shot in film making and television production sets up, or establishes the context for a scene by showing the relationship between its important figures and objects. Its denotation is it shows the entire location or background of a scene. It connotes where the action is taking place and also its atmosphere and pathetic fallacy. As well as that its what we infer from the image. Long shot A long shot typically shows the entire object or human figure and is usually intended to place it in some relation to its surroundings. Its denotation is that the entire subject is in the shot but with some of the background information as well. Its connotations are there styles, it shows us what sort of person they are, it also shows us what there doing, by looking at there body language and facial expression.
