Connotation and Denotation in scenes

This is an establishing shot. It lets us see the whole location or back round of the scene. It connotes the setting and what we infer from the image.







This is a over the shoulder shot. It is a shot of looking over one persons shoulder at another person. It connotes the emotion of the conversation as well as the reaction of the other character, which is in this case, confused and hopeless.


This is a high angle shot, it denotes the shot is taken at a high angle and showing some vertical and horizontal information of where he is and what his doing. It connotes inferiority and an establishing shot. It makes us feel powerless, which means the subject must have the power.


 This is a canted angle shot. It is turned left or right, so the ship is at an odd angle, as if its leaning to one side. It denotes an abstract vibe and means it could be a fun, tense and exciting scene. Fr example in this shot it connotes a spaceship shooting/being shot, It denotes action and a massive fight.


This is a close up shot. This shot is of his head and shoulder only. It connotes his personality, feelings and emotion. Denotation of a mask. It connotes the characters secrecy and intimidating personality.
This a mid shot. It denotes this man from the waist up only. It connotes his body language and how his feeling, which is formal and has the power.




This is a two shot. It denotes a shot of 2 people usually from the waist up. Its connotation is the space between them, it explains how there feeling and there relationship status. For example in this shot it denotes 2 people in a shot tied up. It connotes a mysterious vibe.

    connotation - the character's secrecy and intimidating personality.
