Explain how social contexts influence television programmes.

Explain how social contexts influence television programmes. Refer to Cuffs 2010 to support your answer. Social context influences television programmes, by the producers making the show realistic and so the viewers may be able to relate more to the show. For example in cuffs, there is an innocent brown, Muslim man in the supermarket, all of a sudden he is verbally abused by a gang of racist men, and a short while after stabbed, and died, this is clearly because they believe the bad stereotypes about a brown Muslim man, such as all of them are terrorists. This influences TV programmes by the producers using stereotypes in order to connect with the viewers and show them what it may be like to go out harmlessly as a Muslim, which some Muslims could be able to relate to, for example, The Melee attack, a muslim woman on the bus wearing a headscarf was beaten and called a 'terrorist'.

Public service broadcasters generally transmit programming that aims to improve society by informing viewers, also strive to entertain there viewers.  What are some examples of public service broadcasting on the BBC? For example EastEnders, it teaches you ways to cope with certain situations as the show is very realistic and many can relate to the scenarios that occur, and so its entertaining, educating and informing. Another example is Holby city, it can teach you how to cope with illnesses as well as coping with someone you care for being ill. As well as that, if you are training to be a doctor it gives you an insight of what your getting yourself in to and so is all educating, informing and entertaining. What is the BBC remit? Social, Historical and cultural contexts

Contexts Social context- How media products reflect the society in which they     are produced and that of their target audience. Cultural context- How media products reflect the arts and culture, including popular culture, of their time.  Historical context- How media products reflect events from the past and social changes.  Contexts will overlap one another, For example, the ways in which language is used in media products to reflect the period in which it was written , relates to all three contexts. What is a social, historical, cultural context and how might it influence a media text? During the sixties, the cold war had occurred , and therefore Russians were the enemy to our country. This links to 'The Avengers' due to Emma and Steed visiting a town only to find that this town was invaded with Russian spies. At the end of the show they defeat the Russians. This is a historical...

Analysing The Wire

Image
How does The Wire use generic codes and conventions of a crime drama within the opening of the programme? The opening of The Wire was set in a police station. This conforms to the conventions of Crime as it is set in a police station with a suspect getting questioned, and so sets the scene and makes us intrigued as to why he is being questioned. This connotes that a crime has occurred and has not been fully resolved as the suspect has not been sent to prison immediately , therefore this could be possibly be an Enigma code. Everyone is wearing smart suits, therefore it denotes that it is a professional place of work and a relevant place to society. This connotes the employees as having authority and power towards the suspect being questioned as well as us, the audience. When the suspect is being questioned by the interrogator, the lighting in the room is very bland, dull, dark and lifeless. This conforms to the conventions of c...
