Tv crime drama-conventions and sub genres Narrative Enigma codes- A mystery, for example a murder mystery. Red Herrings- A false lead, someone who may get charged for a crime they didn't commit. Main character tends to have an inexperienced sidekick- For example in Cuffs where Jake is new and his colleague is more experienced than him and thinks he only got the job because of his dad. Cliffhanger at the end of the episode if not resolved- Something that is left not solved or completely finished, for example at the end of nearly every Eastenders episode they leave it on a cliffhanger. Applying Propp to Riverdale. Hero- Archie, because in all 3 seasons he is the main part who acts and investigates the crime, and wont rest until he solves these crimes. He also ends up with the Princess, Veronica. Villain- The villain is Hiram Lodge a dodgy criminal, He is completely against Archie and has gone to extreme measures to make Archie look the villain and attempt to put his heroic actions to shame.  Dispatcher- The hero is provoked to go on the quest by, the black hood, an anonymous man who wanted to make the town of Riverdale a living hell. Representation in the media Representation is concerned with the way that people, ideas and events are presented to us. This could be representation in magazines, news, soap operas, films and so on. It may include representation of people, places and events. This means that media texts are intentionally, written, framed, cropped, captioned, branded,targeted and censored by producers, and that they are entirely artificial versions of the reality we perceive around us. These are he elements that create representation- Mise-en-scene  Sound Editing Camera shots, angles, movements and positions. Characters - Hero- Who goes on a questioned usually ends up with the princess. For example,  Shrek .  Villain- Who is against the hero. For example, Lord Faquard in Shrek . S o u n d Diegetic refers to the world go the text Examples: dialogue, sound effects, music with a source within the text e.g. a radio. Non diegetic refers to everything outside the world of the text  Examples: voiceover. soundtrack, captions, titles, subtitles. On-screen-sound: The audience can see the source the sound. Off-screen-sound: The audience can't see the source of the sound. Its Diegetic because there is dialogue as well as some sound effects.Its also non diegetic because there is music in the background.  It is an on screen sound because we can see the source of the sound. Parallel sound: Matches the action Contrapuntal sound: Does not match the action- might foreshadow something bad may happen. Sound bridge : Helps create a a smooth transition between from one scene to another. The sound "bridges" the 2 scenes.
