Question 2.
Analyse how far the extract depicts the polices point of view rather than the criminals.
As soon as the extract starts we are shown the polices point of view. This is through them having a relaxing lunch in a restaurant only to be interrupted by the diagetic machine, communicating that a crime had occurred. Therefore we see how the police force act on the crime whereas we dont see the criminals point of view before the crime had taken place unlike the officers.
As well as that, within the duration of the crime taking place, the camera focused just on the police officers with, close up and establishing shots, to connote their fear by focusing on the face and body language. They cross cut back and forth between the officers and barely film the crime taking place, therefore it is at the polices point of view as we can see how their feeling and how their acting on the crime without seeing how the criminal is dealing with the crime and why his doing it. As well as that the criminals have black masks on to connote mystery and therefore we are unable to identify the criminals facial expressions to see how he may be feeling unlike the officers.
Finally, on the police chase, they only film the events occurring in Jake and Ryan's car, how they're handling the criminals and their plans to try and catch them. They create a sense of tension and worry whether the criminals are going to get caught. During the police chase, not once do they shoot inside of the criminals car to see how they are handling the crime and what their going to do, and how they are going to get away. Therefore it depicts the polices point of view rather then the criminals, as we dont know how their handling the situation, unlike the officers.
That is why I feel the the police depicts the polices point of view rather than the criminals.
Question 3.
How far does the extract try to create a sense that it's portraying real life?
One way the extract creates a sense that it's portraying real life is through a diverse cast. Every character conform their own stereotype. For instance, throughout the extract you can identify that Ryan takes the authoritative role. This conforms to the stereotype, of black people usually being part of the crime, as he is the main police officer, as black people are present in everyday life, black people would feel connected to the show as in reality, they dont conform to those stereotypes anymore. As well as that, Jake is a homosexual male. This conforms to the stereotype that homosexual men , are 'camp', and feminine, as he is part of the police force, which is not what a stereotypical gay man is seen working in. Woman are seen as equal to men within the police force, they are the counter type to women are seen as girly and feminine, weak and not the gender that would have the ability to work in the police force, as women are seen as having the same abilities as men due to them both working in the police force, as gender equality is occurring more over time, it conforms to real life 2014, that women are in the police force.
Another way the extract creates a sense that it's portraying real life is in the restaurant. In the restaurant they are having a normal conversation which conveys people in the police force are also normal human beings, it shows this through it showing the police officers, back rounds and personalities not just the crime aspect. As well as that they use non diagetic in the restaurant, this conveys normality, due to normal music playing in the back round is what happens in everyday life, it makes us feel connected to the show and forget its just a programme due to it's realistic touches.
The extract also creates a sense that it's portraying real life is the use of mise-en-scene. In the restaurant they use props such as food, to convey realism. The food creates a sense of normality due to them showing all aspects of a police officers day, not just the crime and action or dramatic aspect, this portrays real life as it is what occur in everyday life, and so makes it more natural and realistic. As well as that, the lighting within in the restaurant lighting had dim lighting, there was no technical lighting due to them trying to portray real life, and so the lighting is what would appear in real life, when sitting in a cafe. The police uniform connotes normality due to active police officers wearing police uniform at work everyday.
Therefore this extract really conforms to everyday life as well as modern society in order to make it realistic and create a sense of normality.
