1. How does the music genre suggest what genre the show is?
The music starts tense and slow, and then drastically turns faster, this connotes the show will be full of mystery's and suspense.
2. What does the typography of the graphics suggest about the shows era?
The transitions are fast and rather basic which shows how old fashioned the show was due to the technology not being as advanced and developed yet, as in a modern day series the intro would be modernised with more technical transitions.
3. Explain how Patrick Macnee's character is represented via costume, props and facial expression.
Patrick Macnee's character is presented as a typical old fashioned gentleman. He is wearing a suit which connotes his wealth. He gives her a flirtatious look before giving her a flower.
4. How is the flower prop used to link the two characters together?
By Steed giving Emma the flower shows the struggles of gender equality in the 60's by him showing male dominance.
5. Explain how Diana Riggs character is represented via costume, props and facial expression.
Emma peel is introduced by wearing a black catsuit, which proves the fact woman felt more free in the 60's due to this outfit being more provocative which challenges the stereotype of an 'innocent' woman. Towards the end of the opening she changes into a dress which conforms to this stereotype as well as her smelling the flower given by Steed, all smitten.
6.What does the term 'teleplay' mean or what is the modern terminology? Why do you think the avengers is called this?
A play written for or adapted for television. I think the avengers is called this to intise the audience even more by it being adapted form a play.
7. How is editing linked to the music?
The music in the opening is parallel sound, it matches the actions throughout the duration of the opening, This is due to, at the beginning of the opening when Steed passes Emma the flower, the music is at a rather slower pace yet quite upbeat which connotes romance, when the sound drastically changes, when they show some action, fighting, the music is fast pace and upbeat.
8. How are the use of props and body language used to present the characters towards the end and what are the audience expectations of the show as a result?
Both Steed and Emma towards the end, are in fighting positions both holding weapons, this gives the audience an insight of what will occur throughout the show, action.
Extension: Compare this opening sequence with the one below by picking out the similarities and differences and explaining what they suggest about how television technology has developed and how audience expectations have changed.
In the Cuffs intro everything is way more modernised, there are variety of transitions and those transitions are very speedy, there is a pop of different colours and there is modern day scenery. However The avengers contrast to cuffs due to the transitions being less technical and very simple, everything is in black and white and there is no scenery included in the opening. Although they have there differences they both include parallel sound, as both opening instrumental sounds are dramatic and intense which matches the events that occur in the show. Audience expectations have changed as in those days they were lucky to have technology such as what they used to film the avengers, that was the best money could buy, now days people can be very particular and judge series by the intro, they have to be modernised and in date or it wont give a good impression do the viewer.
