Analysing The Wire

How does The Wire use generic codes and conventions of a crime drama within the opening of the programme?

The opening of The Wire was set in a police station. This conforms to the conventions of Crime as it is set in a police station with a suspect getting questioned, and so sets the scene and makes us intrigued as to why he is being questioned. This connotes that a crime has occurred and has not been fully resolved as the suspect has not been sent to prison immediately , therefore this could be possibly be an Enigma code.

Everyone is wearing smart suits, therefore it denotes that it is a professional place of work and a relevant place to society. This connotes the employees as having authority and power towards the suspect being questioned as well as us, the audience.

When the suspect is being questioned by the interrogator, the lighting in the room is very bland, dull, dark and lifeless. This conforms to the conventions of crime as crime is a dark scene, which they convey in the lighting. This connotes that time in prison, doing time to repay your sins is a dark journey and not much of a life at all.

At intense parts of the opening, they take a close up of the person who is making the impact. This denotes there facial expressions, and tells us how they are feeling. This connotes whether they could be guilty or not, by seeing how there face reacts to the evidence or statements presented to them.

  1. A very well written piece, with good appreciation of generic conventions, detailed examples and thoughtful analysis. Your structure is also clear throughout.

    Keep up this good standard!
