Contexts

Social context- How media products reflect the society in which they     are produced and that of their target audience.

Cultural context- How media products reflect the arts and culture, including popular culture, of their time. 

Historical context- How media products reflect events from the past and social changes. 

Contexts will overlap one another, For example, the ways in which language is used in media products to reflect the period in which it was written , relates to all three contexts.


What is a social, historical, cultural context and how might it influence a media text?




During the sixties, the cold war had occurred , and therefore Russians were the enemy to our country. This links to 'The Avengers' due to Emma and Steed visiting a town only to find that this town was invaded with Russian spies. At the end of the show they defeat the Russians. This is a historical context due to them linking the programme to an event which had happened to them, and used it to connect with the audience and the audience can feel more connected to the show as they have knowledge about it.

    What is here is fine and shows an understanding of contexts.

    However, the work is incomplete, missing the required element in which you apply the contexts to a media text of your choosing. This should be a full paragraph at least, referencing a context and a text it has influenced.

    Please do this as soon as possible!

Editing Speed of editing In a film each scene may last a matter of seconds, or it could continue for a couple of minutes. The speed of editing will help to determine the mood of what is taking place on the screen. For example an action film would be very fast pace and sped up.
