The target audience was adults.

'The Avengers' appeal to them as it contains adult themes, such as action, violent and sexual themes.

The audience could access the show through their TV set on ITV.

'The cold war' impacted the show as the main group of villains in the show are Russian. This reflects the society at the time. how the world viewed russian as the enemy.
•How did the narratives and lack of
recording technology maintain a loyal audience?
Since there was no way to re-watch a show due to lack of technology meant there was no way to record or catch up on the show. Therefore the audience was mr loyal as they dint want to miss out on the avengers.

One gratification theory applied to 'the avengers' is personal identity. This had a big impact on 'the Avengers' due to to it influencing thousands of people. Ladies saw Emma Peel as a model of behaviour, they started to dress the way she dressed in order to follow her fashion 'trend'.
Another gratification theory applied to the avengers was entertainment. These thousands of people watching the avengers watched it for there entertainment. These people could've watched it for a bit of relaxation, escapism from there everyday life, or to fill time, and in the 1960's the men may have watched it for sexual gratification due to Emma Peel being seen as a very gorgeous woman.

A passive audience could interpret the avengers as a white heterosexual society. This is because if your merely watching the show you would not see any black or gay people which gives people a negative impression of the show due to the lack of diversity.
