Regulation

  • Television in the UK is regulated by OFCOM.
  • OFCOM has a set of rules called the broadcasting code:
Crime, religion and harm and offences are 3 of the 10 main sections of OFCOM.

Ofcom also define the watershed- the period before 9pm and after 5:30am when programmes containing material unsuitable for children cannot be shown-this includes sexual content, violence, graphic or disturbing imagery and swearing. This means that programmes such as Cuffs have to be very careful about their content, which might be seen to reduce the realism of the programme, as for example, the criminals avoid swearing.

3. How might the broadcasting impact on cuffs?
No swearing and not harmful to anyone under the age of 18.

4.What is watershed?
The period before 9pm and after 5:30am

5.How might watershed impact on cuffs?
It limits the violence and gore that it can contain before 9pm.

6.Define all 4 of OFCOM's, PSB purposes and 6 PSB characteristics in a TV context.
High quality
Original
Innovative
Challenging
Widely available
Distinctive

7.How does Cuffs show all 4 purposes and six characteristics?
Informs us about the hate about religion and crime, by the muslim man being stabbed due to his region. It informs us about the acceptance of homosexuality and about how multi cultural society is, jake is a homosexual police officer which is a counter type to the stereo type gay men are feminine, and usually wouldn't be seen working in the police force. Stimulates learning and knowledge about how muslims are treated in society. It reflects the uk cultural identity by there being a variety of different people, religion, gender, by there being women in the police force, gay men, muslim police officers, and a black police officer. It represents diversity and alternative viewpoints by there being a black and a muslim police officer, having a authoritative role.
